But did you know that drinking too little water makes the body retain water? It is said that some people carry 10 pounds or more of extra water. This can be caused for a myriad of reasons but consuming too little water, food allergies and hormonal fluctuations are top on the list of causes.

Water isn't the only thing that helps flush the system. Herbs, fruits and vegetable can have the same effect (when combined with the proper amount of water).

This week I voe to drink my 64 oz and incorporate some of the follow recipes into my daily routine.

Hot Lemon Water

Purpose: Your kidneys need water to help flush out all that waste from your system. The lemon water helps your liver and kidneys do their job.
Directions: Heat up 8 oz of water and add 1/2 a lemon.
Drink before breakfast.

Cranberry Water

Purpose: Cranberry juice cleanses the lymphatic system from accumulated wastes, reduced water retention, and helps with cellulite.
Directions: 4 oz of REAL Cranberry Juice (find it in the health food section at your grocery store not on the juice isle) to 28 oz of Water. You can drink up to two of these a day to get your 64 oz of water. It is a little dry tasting at first but soon you will really like the taste. This mix is so good for you after a week you will be able to see the difference it makes on your skin.

Green Tea

Purpose: Rich in antioxidants, can help speed up metabolism, and is even said to help protect skin from sun damage.
Directions: Drink Green Tea as desired throughout the day. Best to drink in the morning since too much caffeine can disrupt sleep.

Water

What I don't get from the above, I will drink in Water to get my total of 64 oz a day.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The New Year's Resolution Contest!!!

Here are the Contest Rules and how to enter:
To enter, post a comment on the Jackson Sage blog about your New Year's Resolution or a comment about how I am doing. I love junk food. I love pizza, beer, wine, and chocolate. You might not think that would be the case since I make natural and healthy skin care but I will admit it, I love junk food.

Since my goal this year is to build healthy habits, I figure the best place to start is with sitting down and seeing what those unhealthy habits are (and even finding out what good habits I have!).

I will keep a food journal. In that journal I will write down everything I eat and the portions. I also will write down any exercise that I did.

I will not count calories till the end of the week. At the end of the week, I will sit down and figure out the calories per day and what my daily caloric intake for the week was. I will also begin to see patterns in my eating habits and places where I can substitute a better habit for healthy alternative.

Once I sit down and calculate my caloric intake for the week. I will also need to find out how many calories a week I should be taking in to maintain my current weight or to lose weight. You can go to the Mayo Clinic's Caloric Calculator to find this out. I will use a site like Calorie King to figure out the calories in the food I am eating. Also, we currently use a meal planner site like relish! to plan our dinners. They include in their recipes calories for each serving making it easy to know what you are eating (and even easier to plan).

Remember I am not making any judgements against myself this week. I just want to get an idea of what my typical habits are.

One habit I want to add this week is to make sure I am drinking my water. I am usually great about this but I fell off the wagon during the busy winter season.

Next week, I will give some H2O alternatives that help to flush the system and make water more fun (and make adult beverages more fun and healthy too!).

Side note: People say that those that keep a food diary not only lose more weight, they keep it off!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The New Year's Resolution Contest!!!

Here are the Contest Rules and how to enter:
To enter, post a comment on the Jackson Sage blog about your New Year's Resolution or a comment about how I am doing. This means I need something this week I can work on while away from work and home while eating Mexican food with margaritas and not being able to work out.

So taking my vitamins will be my goal this week!

But what vitamins should I take, especially for healthy skin? Now the most obvious answer, is to eat healthy and get the vitamins and minerals you need from food, but unfortunately sometimes we need to supplement our diet.

Here is a list of a few vitamins that also give you healthy skin and a list of the ones I will be taking everyday this week!

Multi Vitamin: Good all around. I prefer one with whole-food ingredients.
Zinc: Assist in wound healing, astringent, heals acne, reduce inflammation. Helps with the absorption of Vitamin A. Regulate hormonal production.
Essential Fatty Acids: I will take a fish oil but you can take flax or Evening Primrose Oil. Helps with Dry skin, white head and black heads. Helps to keep skin looking younger.
Vitamin B Complex: Helps keep skin hydrated. Assist in new skin cell growth. Helps to prevent premature aging and acne!

Read more on vitamins for acne at my previous blog.

Also WebMD has a good article on vitamins for skin.

Always check with your health care provider to decide what supplements are right for you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The New Year's Resolution Contest!!!

Here are the Contest Rules and how to enter:
To enter, post a comment on the Jackson Sage blog about your New Year's Resolution or a comment about how I am doing. I love everything from lipstick to nail polish and before I started my own skin care business, let's not discuss the "research" I conducted in the name of skin care. On top of that, after YEARS of being loyal to a brand of make-up I switched to a mineral based make-up. This left me with a lot of old products that I am no longer using.

So my bathroom is filled with half empty tubes, eye shadow colors from college and black nail polish. I know, I know, I have to let it go. This week's resolution is to get rid of all the expired products.

But how do I know if a product has expired? Here are a few rules of thumb. Do remember that each brand has it own shelf life.

Rule Number One: If it looks bad, smells bad or feels bad, it is bad.
Rule Number Two: The more natural the product, the shorter the shelf life. In other words, Jackson Sage products are on the shorter end of the shelf life due to the lack of chemicals to prolong the shelf life.
Rule Number Three: The more water, the shorter the life span of the product.

Skin and Body Care Products:
* Cleansers/Toners: 6 months to 1 year from purchase.
* Creams/Lotions: 6 months to 1 year from purchase. Look for separate to let you know it is really time to say good bye.
* Oil Based Serums: 1 year from purchase.
* Oil Free Serums: 6 months to 1 year from purchase.
* Masques: 6 months to 1 year from purchase.
* Powder Clay Masque or Cleansers: 1 year from purchase.
* Bar Soap: Rarely do they expire. Natural soaps will over time lose their fragrance due to the lack of chemicals to hold the fragrance.
* Liquid Soap: If it is a detergent based cleansing gel, I suggest throwing it away on principle alone. It is bad for your body and the environment. But if is a natural cleanser, 1 year from purchase.
* Nail Polish: 1 year from purchase, or so I have heard. Not sure how something so toxic can expire. My guess is this number is based on the fact that it starts to dry up after being exposed to air. But it is a good rule of thumb since although flat black was recently in, that might not be the case by the time I actually get around to using it again.

Make -up:
* Liquid Foundation: 1 year from purchase.
* Powders: 2 years from purchase.
* Eye Liner Pencil: 2 years from purchase.
* Mascara: 4 months from purchase.
* Eye Shadow: 2 years from purchase.

Hair:
* Shampoo: 1 to 2 years from purchase.
* Conditioner: 6 months to 2 years from purchase.
* Styling products: 1 to 2 years from purchase.

Mouth:
* Toothpaste: 2 years (see expiration date).

Since most things seem to expire around year. January is a good month to have as the throw away and replace month. This makes it easier to keep track of when it is time to let go of that flat black nail polish.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget The New Year's Resolution Contest!!!

Here are the Contest Rules and how to enter:
To enter, post a comment on the Jackson Sage blog about your New Year's Resolution or a comment about how I am doing. We evaluate things we want to change and voe to transform ourselves this year. Usually the resolution involves things we know we can't keep or live up to such never eat another sweet again, become a millionaire, not ever say another curse word. Those goals are great, and they make up think about our past bad habits, and for awhile change them.

But here is my New Year's Resolution. I voe to post one thing each week that I am personally working on to be happier and healthier. Each weeks goal will not be a mountain to climb, but one small healthy habit that I need to try to integrate into my life (or reintegrate) for that week. I will try to keep that healthy goal going after that week but the goal is to integrate healthy habits in small doses to make trying healthy habits the goal not just for one habit to stick.

Each week will be simple goals, and if you want you can try some of the goals as well. Or post in the comments your goals for the year, month, day, week. Fresh apples make this the perfect time of year to use this beneficial fruit for clearer and smoother skin. Apples contain the alpha-hydroxy acid, malic acid. Alpha-hydroxy acids are known to slough of old tired dead skin cells leaving your skin younger and more radiant, and to stimulate collagen production producing smoother skin. Apples are also rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A and C, to help protect against the signs of environmental damage.

Apple Honey Masque
For All Skin Types
Honey 1 tsp
Apple Sauce 1 tsp
Tea Tree Serum 5 drops
Lavender Scrub 1/2 tsp
Lavender Serum 3 drops

Directions
Mix ingredients together. In the process I managed to make it look ten times worse than before.

I know, I know, leave it alone- so I messed with again and again and again.

So what was a monster zit, now makes me look like Frankenstein.

Now I need to make it go away fast, heal and not leave a scar.

I know, I know, I should have left it alone... but in all due respect, it was talking to me, no wait, screaming at me.

Luckily, I have two products that are perfect for just this thing. You can also use the following products on any breakout, even those that you have the strength to leave alone, but they work wonders for the zits you tried to massacre.

My favorite is the Rose Serum. It has several ingredients that heal and repair skin. My top favorite ingredient is Sea Buckthorn Berry! I love this oil because it has it all: Vitamin C, Vitamins A, B1, B2, E, and, Flavonoids and essential fatty acids. In other words a ton of anti-oxidants to help fight free radicals and keep that skin looking healthy. Its rich orange color comes from the Beta-Carotene. This all works together to heal and repair skin.

Another star ingredient is the Rosehip Seed Oil, an excellent oil to aid in regenerating skin cells and reducing scaring (and wrinkles). As if that wasn't enough, it even has Borage Seed Oil, to help calm and reduce inflammation. And that is just to name a few of the star ingredients.

To use, apply a drop on a break out or inflammation. You can leave it on there without rubbing in if you are hanging out at home. If you are heading out of the house, rub in and allow a few minutes before applying make-up to the surface.

Of course there is my favorite Double Duty product Soften Up Salve. This salve is the best because it can heal, repair and cure from head to toe. The blend of herbal infused oils, will repair and reduce inflammation of that monster zit. Apply the same was as the Rose Serum.

But above all else, leave that monster zip alone. Trust me, I know.

Jackson Sage featured in skirt!

Jackson Sage Handcrafted Soaps are featured in the "Over the Counter" section of Richmond skirt! I love the way it smells, and it just feels amazing to use. With a mix of soften oils such as Avocado, Jojoba, and Grapeseed, this is not your run of the mill soap bar. Here is what one of our customers had to say "The lemon sage soap is incredible! I can't stop washing my hands because they feel so soft when I do. I had to go buy a special soap dish so I could keep it by the kitchen sink and wash my hands a thousand times a day."

The Lemon Sage Soap makes and excellent choice to use by the kitchen sink because Sage and Lemon both have antiseptic qualities. But here is where the double duty kicks in-- it is an amazing facial bar for combination to oily skin. The combination of the healing and moisturizing oils with the cleanings essential oils helps to clarify and tone skin without over drying.

Use this wonderful soap from head to toe!

This week order a bar of Lemon Sage Soap and get one bar free! Just mention "Double Duty" in the comments during checkout. Offer ends October 2, 2009.

Today in the Garden

With fall rapidly approaching, it is nice to see beautiful butterflies and bees covering my Mexican Sunflowers.

Fall Face Treats from Jackson Sage

Trick or treat! Well sometimes those things come in unexpected places, like our Doggie Sage line. Since all of our dog products use therapeutic and food grade ingredients, just like our human products, they can work with your skin to heal, clean and repair. We do however want to state that you don't not want to use human products on dogs. While some products are safe, some essential oils are not healthy for dogs.

So here is the low down on the products
The Hot Dog Balm:
The combination of shea butter and neem oil, make it perfect for dry itch spots. Calendula Oil will soothe and repair skin. Use it on your feet, elbows, and any other itchy or dry spot. The essential oils pack in extra cleansing and healing action. Here is what a secret shopper for dogtime.com wrote "The balm is the perfect all natural remedy for skin irritations, infections, hot spots and other minor skin inflictions. But one smell, and you, like me will want it for yourself. My dog had no minor skin problems, but I tried it on my rough elbows and nicks from gardening over the weekend. In one day, those little scrapes were gone and my dry bits smooth."

Doggie Sage Therapeutic Herbal Mist:
Combines powerful extracts with Icelandic Thermal Brine to help soothe skin and rid itches. Spray on bug bites. Even mist legs after shaving to help relieve razor burn. (You can purchase this product at select Whole Foods or online in October.)

Doggie Sage Shampoo Bar:
The Shampoo Bar is great for traveling or camping when you don't want to bring all those extra bottles. You can use it for your hair, hands, and body. A facebook fan wrote "My pups love the bar shampoo! (I've even used it myself!) Here is what a customer had to say about our Mist, "I use it everyday on my hair. It helps to keep my hair shinny without over doing it. I can use between washes to help style my hair."

Have you tried our dog products on your dog or on yourself? What is Lycopene? A small molecule that is rich in antioxidants. Even better tomatoes are rich in other antioxidants-- vitamin A and C! Not only that they are naturally acidic, and have cooling and astringent properties.

What does this mean? That tomatoes help get rid excessive oils, help with acne and brighten dull skin.

This recipe uses tomato paste but you can choose, and is recommended, to use pulp your home grown tomatoes.
The measurements are not exact. You will want to form a nice paste that flows easily onto your face.

1 spoonful of Lavender Daily Scrub
1 spoonful of Organic Tomato Paste (or pulp from home grown tomatoes)
1/4 tsp Honey
5 drops Tea Tree Serum
Add Lavender Toner to form a nice flowing paste

Directions
1. Clean face
2. Mist face with Lime Toner
3. Apply Tomato Masque, avoiding eye area, gently in a circular motion
4. Leave masque on for 15 minutes.
5. Remove with a wash cloth and warm water

Fireworks and Dogs

A Doggie Service Message from Princess Buttercup.

While you and your family are celebrating the 4th of July, your dog may be feeling like having a nervous breakdown. Some dogs have a sensitivity, fear and possibly terror to the sounds of fireworks and it is wise to take precautions for (wo)Man's best friend.
1. Keep all animals securely indoors. Do NOT leave dogs unattended in the backyard during the fireworks. Dogs can become frightened and try to escape yard.
2. Make sure that all animals are properly identified just in case, while scared, they manage to get out of the house.
3. Do NOT take a dog to see the Fireworks display with you and your family.
4. Do NOT have dog outside while family lights fireworks. Some dogs are not scared of the sound but may think the lights flying everywhere would be fun to chase.
5. If your dog has a fear of fireworks, try giving them Rescue Remedy. This blend of flower essences helps to calm your dog.
6. If you know that your dog has extreme anxiety about fireworks, consult your vet before the 4th of July. She may prescribe medication that will help calm your dog.
7. Dogs do like Hot Dogs, they are very very yummy. Please give us some, it will make us happy. But do be careful some food will make out tummies ache and some things like raisins are deadly for dogs. Please keep food out of our reach because we don't know what is good for us and what is not. But Hot Dogs are very good for us so please share!

I hope you and your family have a wonderful 4th of July.
God Bless America.
~Princess Buttercup

Don't forget to become my fan on Facebook

11 Bridal Skin Care Tips

How to help your skin glow for your big day!

Step 1: HYDRATE
You hear this all the time but it must be said: DRINK YOUR WATER. Dehydration makes skin look tired and may even cause you to have more breakouts. Also, add 2 drops of Bach Rescue Remedy to balance your energy, calm nerves, and ease stress.

Step 2: TAKE YOUR VITAMINS!
Make sure you are taking a multi. You may also want to take B-complex, Zine, and Fish Oil (Or Borage Oil).

Step 3: POWER FOODS
Watch what you eat while you are running around trying to get everything on your to do list completed. Need a snack, choose nuts over chips. Want to wake up, choose green tea over a coke. Simple choices will make your skin say thank you.

Step 4: SKIN CARE REGIME
Find a healthy skin care regime at least two month before the big. When changing skin care lines, it takes your skin a few weeks to adjust to the new products. Also, you want to see how you skin acts at all times of the month! Your regime should include a mild cleanser, weekly exfoliation, a toner, and face cream and/or serum. If you planning on getting a facial, schedule one two months before and follow up closer to the big day. If your facial includes a peel or microdermabrasion, make sure you schedule no closer than two weeks before the big day. This will give you skin time to heal. No one wants peeling skin on the big day! Gentle natural facials can be schedule as close to your wedding day as you would like. If you are in Richmond I recommend True Spa for your facials.

Step 5: TREAT BREAKOUTS
Don't forget to include a breakout treatment such as our Tea Tree Serum with Willowbark Extract. Use Serum to spot treat breakouts. It will help rid your unwanted facial guest without creating dry flaky skin.

Step 6: USE NATURAL SOAPS
Don't forget to take care of the skin on your body. Lots of wedding dresses show not only your face but neck, back, shoulders, and arms. Switch to a natural soap that will nourish your skin not strip it. Also opt for a bar with exfoliation to get rid of dead, dull skin. I recommend Jackson Sage Blue Eucalyptus and Lavender Soap. It not only has nourishing oils and Shea Butter, it includes French Green Clay to deeply and gently cleanse skin.

Step 7: USE A NATURAL BODY CREAM
Switching to a a high quality body cream.
